Selling price = cost × (1 + markup)

How to calculate markup

Markup is how much you add on top of the cost, expressed as a percentage of the cost: markup = (selling price − cost) ÷ cost. To get a price from a markup: price = cost × (1 + markup).

A product that costs $40 with a 50 % markup sells for $60. The $20 profit is 50 % of the cost but only 33.3 % of the price — that 33.3 % is the margin.

That gap is why a 100 % markup (doubling the cost) is a 50 % margin, not 100 %. If your target is expressed as a margin, use the margin tab instead of adding the percentage to the cost.

Worked example

  • Cost: $40 · Markup: 50 %
  • Selling price = 40 × 1.5 = $60
  • Profit = 60 − 40 = $20
  • Margin = 20 ÷ 60 = 33.3 %

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a markup percentage?+
Subtract the cost from the selling price, then divide by the cost. A $25 cost sold at $40: (40 − 25) ÷ 25 = 60 % markup.
Is markup the same as margin?+
No. Markup divides the profit by the cost, margin divides it by the selling price. A 50 % markup is a 33.3 % margin.
What is a 100 % markup?+
Doubling the cost: a $10 item sold at $20. It gives a 50 % margin.
How do I convert markup to margin?+
Margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup). For 25 %: 0.25 ÷ 1.25 = 20 % margin. The chart on this page lists common values.
Is this markup calculator free?+
Yes, free and without signup. Everything is calculated in your browser.
