VAT Calculator

Add VAT to a net price or take it out of a gross price. Pick a country rate or type your own, and get the net amount, the VAT and the total instantly.

Net (excl. VAT) £100.00, VAT £20.00, Gross (incl. VAT) £120.00

Rounded to the cent: the net is rounded first and VAT = gross − net, so the three figures always add up.

How to calculate VAT

Add VAT

Gross = net × (1 + rate)

£100 net at 20% → 100 × 1.20 = £120 gross, of which £20 VAT

Remove VAT

Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate)

£120 gross at 20% → 120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, VAT = £20

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?
Divide the price by 1.2. For £60 including VAT: 60 ÷ 1.2 = £50 net, so the VAT is £10. Do not subtract 20% of the gross price: that would give £48, which is wrong.
How do I add 20% VAT?
Multiply the net price by 1.2. £50 net becomes £60 including VAT.
What is the difference between net and gross?
Net is the price before VAT. Gross is the price the customer pays, VAT included.
Is this VAT calculator free?
Yes, free and without signup. Everything is calculated in your browser.
How do I add VAT to several invoice lines?
Open the “Invoice lines” tab, enter each amount with its rate and read the totals per rate and the grand total. You can paste a list of amounts (even from a spreadsheet) and copy the result as a table or CSV.
Should VAT be rounded per line or on the total?
Both are used. Rounding on each line then adding up matches an invoice that shows the VAT of every line; adding the lines per rate and rounding once matches an invoice with one VAT amount per rate. The two can differ by a few cents, so the calculator lets you choose.
What is the reverse charge?
For many B2B sales between VAT-registered businesses in different EU countries, the supplier charges no VAT and the customer accounts for it instead. Tick “Reverse charge (B2B)” to see the invoice at 0%. Whether a sale qualifies depends on what you sell and where, so confirm it with your tax authority.
How do I enter a credit note?
Type the amount with a minus sign (for example -40). The VAT is negative too and is subtracted from the totals, as on a credit note. In the “Invoice lines” tab a credit line sits next to the invoice lines and the totals per rate are netted.
How does the UK VAT flat rate scheme work?
Instead of VAT on sales minus VAT on purchases, you pay HMRC a fixed percentage of your VAT-inclusive turnover. The percentage depends on your business type (for example 11% for photography, 14.5% for IT consultancy), is 16.5% for a limited cost business and is 1 point lower in your first year. Open the “UK flat-rate scheme” tab for an estimate.
How does VAT work when I sell to consumers in another EU country?
Up to €10,000 (excl. VAT) a year of sales to consumers in other EU countries, all countries added together and in both the current and the previous year, you may charge your own country's VAT. Above that, you charge the VAT rate of the buyer's country and can declare it through the OSS one-stop shop in your own country. Open the “EU distance sales (OSS)” tab for an estimate. Sales to a business with a valid VAT number fall under the reverse charge, and digital services follow the same €10,000 rule.
